Who is the Author?
Dr. Penley is an author, speaker, scholar, and professor. But don't worry. He still knows how to crack a joke. Dr. Penley studied Greek, Hebrew and Aramaic in undergraduate and graduate programs at Columbia International University. He researched the Bible in German and French and travelled to Israel, Egypt, Turkey and Greece as he completed a Ph.D. from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. His specialty is the historical context of Jesus and the Gospels, but his historical background research spans from Genesis to Revelation. T&T Clark (London) published the pinnacle of his academic research, but you are likely to run into his articles in RELEVANT magazine or blogs posted by groups like CATALYST or Scot McKnight's Jesus Creed.
As a professor, he has taught college and seminary courses on How to Interpret the Bible, Jesus and the Gospels, Paul's Epistles, and Bible Backgrounds. He teaches Hermeneutics Seminars at churches around the world. He loves watching people experience the thrill of finally understanding how the mission of Jesus in first-century Israel directs us today.
Dr. Penley doesn’t want that message to get stuck in college courses or academic circles, so he shares at churches and retreats, at Bible conference centers and summer programs. He talks about it over dinner, on the radio and with every interested audience. However, people still ask how they can get more. That’s why he writes. Right now he is working on a book sequel: What Jesus Meant - Listening to his words with first-century ears.
